Honorary Citizen of Hermann Hesse’s Birthplace, Calw, Germany
Medal celebrating Ralph Freedman as Honorary Citizen of Hermann Hesse’s birthplace, the Black Forest city of Calw in Germany on the occasion of the poet’s 125th birthday on July 2, 2002. Ralph Freedman was chosen for this honor for his scholarship on Hermann Hesse’s work, especially his biography of the poet, Hermann Hesse: Pilgrim on Crisis (Hermann Hesse – Autor du kisen, German title) which had a lasting resonance in Germany as well as in the English-speaking world.
